Working Title:  “What Did You Expect?”

Concept:

A mixed media installation combining analog objects and natural materials with artificial intelligence as the voice in your ear. It features a Greek-styled pedestal and a French-style rotary phone adorned with faux plants, creating this natural spectacle in the space it inhabits. The user is invited to pick up the phone and is prompted by an AI voice, asking to select a number on the rotary phone corresponding to their emotion in the moment. With that, the AI will calibrate an unexpected tone and respond to the user’s feelings, creating an uncomfortable, almost awkward setting. The user can continue to talk to the AI or hang up the phone. This interaction is intended to create a natural anxiety for the user, ultimately leaving them confused about whether what they are feeling is valid or not.

Timeline:

WINTER

WK4: Buy The Rotary Phone

Dissect the inner workings of the machine to figure out certain measurements and placements for the computer, along with dimensions for the pedestal.

WK5: Midterm - Develop A Blueprint & Present Current Findings

Decide on which materials to buy for the code (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, sensors, etc.) and map the plan to build a pedestal.

WK6: Buy Materials & Begin Coding

Prioritize voice/sound recognition to produce certain other sounds.

WK7: First Iteration of Coding Complete & Begin Programming Sensors/Hardware

Continue iterating by the end of the week until complete.

WK8: Final Iteration of Coding Complete & Secure to Phone

WK9: Final - Presentation of Current Work

----------------------

SPRING

WK11: Write the Script, Incorporate ChatGPT API, Find VoiceBanks (?)

Replace the sounds with the scripted lines, generated by ChatGPT API.

WK12-13: Begin Foam Sculpt of Pedestal, Mold, & Plaster

WK14: Assemble All Componants

Transportable and secure.

WK15:  Midterm Crit

Code is refined. Pedestal is refined, and plants bought and assembled.

WK16-17: User Testing & Debugging

WK18: Final Debugging
